I'm watching the second half of this week's WSOP broadcast. ESPN has another "Poker Fact." They say, "There are 2,598,960 possible 5-card combinations in poker." And, as it happens, that is correct!
It shouldn't be cause for amazement when ESPN gets something like this right, but given their recent track record, it is.

ESPN gets one right

Knowing all the math behind most poker hands is useful because?
These are my guesses:
A) It allows you to calculate your odds and make informed decisions?
B) If poker is a game of more skill than luck, it increases your odds because you know when it is worth it for you to make a move?
C) So by knowing accurately the odds of, say, being four to a flush on the flop and hitting it by the river, you can use your skill to decide how to bet that?
D) None of the above. Poker isn't a game of skill. It's a game of luck. It's gambling as much as any other casino game is gambling. So who cares what the numeric odds of any particular card combination are? It's still down to you and that donk who's chasing his flush draw regardless of his "odds" of hitting it. Knowing a bunch of useless math isn't going to stop that guy from getting lucky and hitting his miracle card and taking your stack.
