Before and after

Mike Matusow got a lot of attention for his weight loss when he showed up for the first day of the World Series of Poker having shed just enough pounds to win a $100,000 prop bet from Ted Forrest.

But not only did Matusow, by his own admission, start packing the weight back on the very next day, he's a complete piker when compared to what Thomas "Thunder" Keller has done. Compare these two photos I found of him, the first from 2004, and the second from this month. I saw a brief interview he did with PokerNews during his first WSOP event, and he said that he has dropped nearly 200 pounds.

And, as far as I know, it didn't take a prop bet to motivate him. Nice work, sir.

(Of course, he could take another smidgen off of that weight if he shaved that nasty little goatee....)

I heard he had gastro surgery...

It wouldn't be impossible to lose 200 pounds in 2 or 3 years without bariatric surgery, but when you see or hear of that rate of loss, the good bet is that you'd find abdominal incisions.

My secretary went through the procedure, and it is no picnic. Even with surgery, it can still be quite difficult to keep weight off, not to mention the hassles of taking a variety of supplements to meet nutritional needs, as well as needing to be very particular in how one eats as certain foods can be uncomfortable (if not actually dangerous) to eat. As someone who lost his brother to morbid obesity at age 38, I applaud any effort to live a healthier lifestyle, even it means resorting to surgery for those facing extreme weight issues.

It's great that both were able to lose the weight albeit in different ways.

Too bad Matusow is putting the weight back on. The weight loss will help him more than the $100,000 he won from Ted Forrest.
