Poker gems, #445

Scott Huff and Joe Stapleton, in Bluff magazine, December, 2011, page 88, commenting on various professional poker players' decisions about where to relocate outside of the United States in order to be able to continue playing online.

Aguiar, Deeb, others -----> Mexico.

Uhhh, is it just me, or does this sound like an accident waiting to happen? In Mexico, you can get kidnapped and ransomed if you're suspected of having an abundance of unused Tower Records gift cards.

What the heck is going to happen when a country that has a pretty disproportionate gun/job ratio finds out a bunch of Vitamin D-deficient supernerds who keep massive amounts of cash on them--and who have the ability to transfer large sums of money electronically--live in that ridiculously lavish high-rise over there? You know, the only building you can see no matter where you're standing in the barrio?

I thought the same thing when I read some posts by a guy who lived there. What makes them think it's safe to live in Mexico, especially the part where they are? Yeah it's quiet now but the amount of money they'll spend (not to mention the purchases of weed and pharmaceuticals) will attract notice and from there it's a short step to armed robbery. I'd choose somewhere else myself. Why doesn't one of these guys buy their own island in the Caribbean and they can all set up there?

You are exactly right. I know a businessman who was essentially held hostage in his Mexican hotel room and forced to transfer money to associates of his crooked Mexican "partner". He only got out because some of the hotel staff helped him escape.

Poker players can get careless anywhere though. I remember being on the rail at the WSOP and seeing a poker player pull out two huge bundles (musta been 10k each) out of his pocket, looked at them and put them back in. That is a mugging waiting to happen.
