A rare public admission

Shane Schleger, one of the bright, rising stars of tournament poker a few years ago, on Thanksgiving Day put up this blog post, in which he admits that he is now toward the end of his third consecutive losing year. It's pretty painful to read, but for those of you who have aspirations to make this game your livelihood, you literally cannot hear of such failures too many times. It can be more brutal that you probably realize, even if one is greatly talented, as "Shaniac" undeniably is. Sobering stuff.

I read the post and find it heartening that he has "found the way", so to speak. I hope others in his position read or find this as it really shows the futility many have set their lives to. Life is difficult enough for many without laying it all on the line for playing cards. Some make it, too many don't.

Grump is one of those people I can admire in this endeavour as he "tested" the waters first and did not chuck it all for the glitz and glamour.

These are the stories that everyone needs to see too, not just the winner's getting their bracelets and cheques. Show the people who don't make it or how hard a life it can be..

If he lost for 3 years, he must have had a lot of money saved up.

Or did he get a job?

Now I'd be gone from poker after a year - but that's me. Such constant losing must affect your previously winning style.

People forget that the top players immediately branch out into some sort of business - Greg Raymer invests in other players.

Still, ouch.
